Minted from 1909 through 1958, Lincoln Wheat pennies were among the longest-running United States coin series in history. The Lincoln cent was designed by famous Lithuanian-born sculptor and engraver Victor David Brenner and initially honored the 100^th anniversary of President Lincoln's birth; the wheat stalk design on the reverse of the coin symbolizes our nation's prosperity. The Lincoln cent arrived with great fanfare on August 2, 1909, replacing the Indian Head pennies that had been circulating for up to half a century.
